EnvironmentI work with a small team of five including our agent, Lindsay. I was hired in as a Marketing and Sales Assistant. I support the sales team in finding new leads by cold calling prospects, running fundraisers and events, keeping our social media up to date and managing a few other Telemarketers. We always strive to meet our daily goals, which in turn will produce the desired business each month.
Target MarketAs an insurance agency, we target everybody! No matter what stage of life you find yourself in, there is a product that will cover you in the event of the unknown. Life insurance is important, and many people blow it off. We had a client who passed away and had not moved on a life insurance policy that we had brought to the table. His family incurred all of the funeral costs. Anything can happen and it's better to have a policy and not need it, than to need a policy and not have it.
HistoryLindsay opened our office five years ago after previously working for Marsh selling aviation insurance. She decided to leave Marsh, as there was a lot of traveling, to open her State Farm agency so she could spend more time with her family. It has been everything she could've dreamt for. Since then she has grown her business to where we are today! We have a great team that is close with one another, ready to assist with any scenario.

Observations and ExperienceOver the course of my time there, I have learned many valuable life skills and seen many scenarios play out with our clients. Everybody says "It will never happen to me!" and then when it does, they aren't prepared. That was hard to see sometimes, because major events can really mess up what's going on with your life.
ChangesIf I could make any changes, there would only be one. Cold calling gets tedious sometimes, especially when no one is answering there phone. Not only are we trying to help these prospects, but it's how we make our living! Always be nice to a telemarketer if you receive a call from one, they have definitely already been yelled at that day, and being kind only takes a few seconds. It will make a difference to someone!
ConcluionI learned valuable office/phone skills from this co-op experience that I will use in my everyday life, and I had the opportunity to gain first hand experience with insurance, something that I will one day find myself using and paying for. Yes, insurance is an expensive hassle (especially in Michigan), but it is an investment that will be there for you when you need it most. I also used business standard software such as Microsoft Office which helped me get certified in Mrs. Malsbury's Computer Operations in Business class.

Future Plans
I will be attending Michigan State University in the fall to study Computer Science. I will be focusing on cyber security. My goal is to start a career within the FBI, or as a White Hat Hacker. I can directly apply what I learned in this position to experience at MSU and on into my career.
